Vivah, in Hinduism, refers to the sacrament of marriage. It is considered one of the most important rites of passage for an individual and is regarded as a sacred and lifelong commitment between a man and a woman. Hindu marriage is a culturally rich and elaborate ceremony, often marked by various rituals and customs that vary across different regions of India.

Here are some key aspects of a traditional Hindu marriage ceremony:

• Pre-wedding rituals: Before the wedding day, there are several pre-wedding ceremonies that take place. These may include engagement (sagai), haldi ceremony (applying turmeric paste to the bride and groom), mehndi ceremony (applying henna designs on the bride’s hands and feet), and sangeet (a musical night of celebration and dance).

• Wedding ceremony: The main wedding ceremony typically takes place at a temple or a sacred place. The rituals and customs during the wedding vary according to regional and family traditions. The ceremony is conducted by a Hindu priest and witnessed by family and friends.

• Kanyadaan: This is a significant ritual in which the bride’s parents give her away to the groom. It symbolizes the transfer of responsibility and care from the bride’s family to the groom’s family.

• Saptapadi: In this ritual, the bride and groom take seven steps together around the sacred fire (Agni) while making seven marriage vows. Each step represents a promise they make to each other for their married life.

• Mangalsutra and Sindoor: The groom ties a sacred thread, known as the mangalsutra, around the bride’s neck, symbolizing her marital status. Additionally, he applies sindoor (vermilion) in the parting of the bride’s hair, representing her married status.

• Blessings and reception: After the wedding ceremony, family and friends offer blessings to the newlywed couple. A reception or wedding feast is held to celebrate the union, and guests come together to enjoy food, music, and dance.

It’s important to note that while these are some common elements of a traditional Hindu marriage, practices may vary based on cultural differences and personal preferences. In modern times, some couples may choose to simplify the ceremony or adapt certain aspects to suit their preferences while still keeping the essence of the sacred union intact.
